Damascus steel wedding rings

Damascus steel is made from multi-layered steel, alternating layers with different carbon contents. This gives it exceptional hardness and durability. The process of making Damascus steel is historical and requires the skills of skilled craftsmen. All Damascus steel used in our rings is made in Estonia, Saaremaa, by the hand of a talented knife maker.

The characteristic pattern of Damascus steel is created during the steel-making process. Layers of steel with varying carbon contents are compiled and heated. During heating, the layers merge, forming the distinctive pattern of Damascus steel. The pattern arises because the layers have different chemical compositions and react differently to heat, altering their properties and creating a unique patterned effect.

To further enhance the patterns, Damascus steel is etched. The pattern of the steel begins to emerge immediately after etching, but the longer the steel is etched, the darker the pattern becomes. To create even greater contrast in the Damascus pattern, we immerse the finished rings in coffee. Yes, exactly, coffee! Coffee acts like an acid, etching the surface of the steel and helping to enhance the contrast of the pattern.

Every piece made from Damascus steel is unique, which makes Damascus steel wedding rings particularly special! Due to their distinctive patterns, Damascus steel can be compared to fingerprints. As the process of making Damascus steel involves masterful craftsmanship and many random variables, each item made from Damascus steel is a kind of artwork, carrying the maker’s expertise and creativity.

We ALWAYS install a gold or silver lining in Damascus steel rings. This is because Damascus steel can be more susceptible to corrosion, and it is not good for the steel to be in direct, tight contact with the skin. If the finger sweats and moisture remains under the ring, the steel can easily start to rust. A gold or silver lining helps protect the steel from moisture and corrosion, and also enhances the durability of the ring. Additionally, the lining adds aesthetic value, as the gold or silver lining creates a beautiful contrast between the dark pattern of the steel and the shine of the gold or silver.

The corrosion mentioned earlier can also occur on the surface of the ring if it comes into contact with various chemicals or acids and is not rinsed and dried properly afterwards. For example, wearing the ring in a swimming pool, where it stays in chlorinated water and remains wet, may lead to some rust spots. However, there is no need to be alarmed – simply take a soft cloth and lightly rub the spots that have appeared. After that, you can confidently put the rings back on your finger, and if some spots are still visible, know that these will disappear on their own quite quickly while wearing the ring!

We have made many Damascus steel rings, and even the first wedding rings we made together 10 years ago were made of Damascus steel. So far, however, not a single pair of rings has returned to us due to rusting. The pattern on Damascus rings might lose some of its contrast over time – this can be refreshed during maintenance at our place.

However, if rust spots develop on your ring that do not come off, or if there is widespread rust, it is advisable to bring it to us for cleaning. But once again, I say that such a situation has not yet occurred.

Conscious maintenance of a Damascus steel ring is very important for keeping the rings beautiful.

Here are some tips on how to care for a Damascus steel ring:

  • Keep the ring away from moisture. It’s important to keep the ring clean (rinse with clean water) and dry thoroughly. Moisture can cause the steel to corrode and damage the beauty of the pattern. Also, avoid exposing the steel to acids and alkalis, such as perfumes, cosmetics, chemical cleaning agents, hair care products, and even acidic foods.
  • Clean the ring regularly. Use a soft cloth or brush to remove dirt and stains. Avoid using hard brushes that can scratch the surface of the steel.
  • If you plan not to wear the ring for an extended period, oil its surface to protect it from corrosion. You can use a special oil designed to protect steel.
  • Do not store the steel ring in the same place as other metals, as different metals can cause a chemical reaction that may damage the ring.
